the summer lull…

It seems every summer I get busy with life and don’t do as much music… and this summer is no exception.  I just got back from a trip touring the pacific northwest… seattle, vancouver, victoria, and the washington state coast.  It was a great time, quite a beautiful set of places and I had some excellent experiences.  I want to spend more time on the washington coast, as it was quite beautiful.

Not much going on with music, though I know entamoeba has some possible dance work coming up which I’m VERY MUCH looking forward to.

Shows over…

Ahdanco is over… just a quick note to thank you for coming out.  It was a very rewarding musical performance.  I’m not sure what I expected, but it was fabulous working with three great dancers and a great choreographer.  What’s next for entamoeba?  Hopefully more composition for dance companies!

Also, earlier today, I made the final edits to the RPM 2011 project with Scott Caplener.  I still need to do the final mixes as there are just a few minor tweaks that need to be done, but watch this space for that release, probably in the next couple of weeks.

We had a great show last night with ahdanco… I think we were really on. We seemed to really be in sync with the dancers, the pieces just seemed to flow well and we seemed to hit all the marks. It’s really cool how things have come together with the piece (called “kairos”).

If you did not make it out Friday or last night, this is your last chance…. The show closes tonight. See my previous posts for information on the show and where to get tickets, etc.

It has been super cool to work with a dance company and collaborate on a piece, as well as perform it live. I hope entamoeba has many more opportunities to do this… It is working even better than I expected.

Hello everyone… want to let you know about some shows I’m playing this coming weekend.

Who:
entamoeba’s original music performed live, to accompany dance performance from ahdanco

When:
this weekend, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights (May 6-8 2011)

Where:
The Ashby Stage, 1901 Ashby, Berkeley, CA
Over the past several months my band entamoeba has been working with a dance company called ahdanco on the music for an upcoming modern dance performance.  We created about 24 minutes of music, much of it beginning as improvisation in rehearsals in collaboration with the dancers and choreographer abigail hosein.  The result is a piece we are calling Kairos.
The event will also feature spoken word performances to accompany modern dance choreographed by abigail hosein.  More information below.

entamoeba is:
mark fassett: upright electric bass, guitar, and loop pedal
nicole katler:  vocals, guitar, loop pedal
chris evans:  cello, loop pedal

Thanks for reading…

I had another opportunity to play at the Wed Open Mic at Angelica’s Bistro in Redwood City… this time I grabbed my long time friend/piano player and musician extraordinaire Mike Clare with me.  I think a pleasant time was had by all… well, at least by Mike and me.

RPM 2011

RPM challenge begins… Today! Looking forward to creating some new stuff this month, in collaboration with friend Scott Caplener. I have absolutely no clue what it will end up sounding like..

I will post update here on progress and maybe link to some works in progress.

If you’re free on Sunday, come hear entamoeba play at El Rio in San Francisco.  I’m not sure when we will play, but it’s an earlier show… first band goes on at 6pm, so if you’re someone who likes to get to bed early on a school night, it might be perfect for you.

OH, this is pretty cool too… I think Aaron Priskorn is going to play with us on Sunday for a few songs as well… so yea, we’re getting the band back together…

Also, I’m trying out this new audio site called bandcamp…. you may have seen it before.   The design is great and gives you an easy way to put your music up online.  I’ve started by putting up the music from warrenpeece, the project John Rose and I had done for the RPM Challenge in 2008 and 2010.   This might be a bit easier than creating a bunch of individual pages for each of my projects. I’m going to try it out for a bit… the nice thing is people can easily listen to the music there, share via social networks, etc.

Hope you had a good holiday…

After my performance at last week’s open mic at Angelica’s Bistro in Redwood City, I was invited back to be a part of a contest that will happen this Friday night… people were invited over open mics over the last several months to perform and compete for a $250 prize.  Pretty cool… not sure how much of a chance I have, but what the heck, it will be fun.

The interesting and fun challenge for me is to prepare some of my original songs… if you know my music, a lot of it is not easily arranged for solo acoustic.  So far I have a few songs ready to go.  I’m not sure how many originals vs. covers I’m going to do (or even how much material I get to perform).  I guess I’ll see Friday night!

If you can make it… I’d love to see you there.  Friday, 12/17/2010, Angelica’s Bistro, Redwood City.

So last night, after being inspired at my open mic at the Caspar Inn last week, I decided to tempt fate again.  I headed to Angelica’s Bistro open mic in Redwood City.  They gave me a full 15 minutes, which was very nice… played three songs.  It was a good time, lots of good energy and nice people there, plus one guy did an AC/DC cover on his lap slide guitar, was way cool.   I think I’ll go back!

Had a GREAT music retreat last week…. I started off with several days in a cottage in Albion, south of Mendocino, then spent a night at a hot spring near Ukiah.  I was able to do quite a bit of writing, and though I didn’t complete anything, I came up with 30+ fragments and ideas that will eventually find their way into new music.  Plus, I greatly enjoyed a night out at the Caspar Inn, where I headed for their open mic and had a ton of time to play a few originals and covers.  All in all… a great week!

Friday evening, 12/10/2010, entamoeba will be performing in San Francisco for a store opening at 24th and Castro… have loopers will travel.  It’s possible that David from the Broun Fellinis might join us… no word for certain.

Here are a couple of shots of my music retreat:
