The usual answer is “a drummer” but that doesn’t work today.
I was at the library the other day with my daugther. She needed to pick out a biography for a school project, and as she was thumbing through the biography section she came across this book titled “Ghost Rider” and said it looked great. Thirteen years old, and yet so wise.
The book is written by the Rush drummer Neil Peart, and it’s a memoir of his motorcycle travels after the death of his daughter, and then his wife just months later.
Mercifully, he tells the death story in the first few pages… and the rest of the story is a travelogue mixed with his observations and meditations. For anyone who has gone through a “Dark Night of the Soul” as Thomas Moore describes times like this, the book is a revelation. It provides yet another opportunity to connect with the great questions about life, in a very deep and meaningful way.
I would think this book would not be that interesting to a Rush fan, because it contains very little information about the band (at least so far). But for me, this book is something I am having trouble putting down. I guess I’m going to have to see what Rush has done since… see if/how this has affected Neil’s lyrics (he is the lyricist for the band).
I haven’t posted in a while, but there are several things to talk about…
- I had a great gig this past Saturday night at El Rio in San Francisco with Entamoeba. We had a great crowd, thanks so much to everyone who made it out. Yes, I should have told you about it on these pages… but alas… I didn’t. Nevertheless, turnout and energy were great! I think we clearly drew enough people to justify a night on their big stage, I know Nicole is working on that. We will also do some recording soon…
- The RPM Challenge is happening again for me this year… and I’m pretty sure John Rose will be working with me again, under our moniker of “Warren Peece.” I have no idea what we’ll be coming up with, since we won’t start working on this project until February 1, but stay tuned, I’ll be sure and post here about what we’re up to.
- I have at least two gigs scheduled for February, one with “Along For The Ride” and another with Entamoeba. The “Along For The Ride” performance is a private party, but the Entamoeba gig is at the makeout room in San Francisco on Friday, February 27. I will update here when I know more (who we are playing with, etc).
- I have begun work on another new project. Hopefully this won’t be yet another phantom project that never sees the light of day, but you never know… I have one song that is getting close to being ready for you to hear, I will post that in the next couple of weeks when I get a bit more time. However, I imagine this project will stop completely when the RPM Challenge rolls along February 1…
